ElectroRecycle was BC’s non-profit dedicated to recycling small home appliances and power tools. For back to back summers, my teammate (another student) and I travelled the province (25+ towns each summer) to host collection events for people’s recycling in under-served communities, educate citizens on the program, and work with private entities and regional districts to manage the program’s efficiency.
While this job was a formative experience for me personally, I also learned several valuable skills which have transferred to other endeavours.
Role and Experience
- Independently planned and executed 12+ road trips covering almost the entire province
- Coordinated and met with Regional District officials to obtain feedback on the program and find ways to improve efficiency
- Acted as the ‘eyes on the ground’ for the CESA administration, conducting reports on program compliance from depots and municipalities
- Engaged with thousands of individuals, educating them on the program as well as broader sustainability initiatives
- Received praise from the entire Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association’s (CESA) board for the overwhelming success of our efforts
- Reinforced my ability to work under pressure and find solutions to issues as they arise
- Collaborated alongside several BC First Nations to adapt the program to their needs
- Worked and lived alongside a teammate for weeks at a time, showing my ability to work well with others, no matter the circumstances
